Whiteness & Anti-Racism

For white people to support racial justice and the dismantling of systems of racial oppression, the work of honest self-examination of their experience of race is critical. I welcome and support white people who are interested in having a nonjudgemental space to explore their experience of whiteness, white privilege, and existing within the system of white supremacy.

I recommend starting with these resources from anti-racism experts:

RECOMMENDED RESOURCES

Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World, and Be a Good Ancestor

by Layla Saad

This is an incredibly powerful and necessary resource for anyone wanting to begin or deepen their anti-racism work. Layla Saad leads the reader through a 28-day workbook journey of understanding their white privilege and participation in white supremacy, so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on black, indigenous and people of color, and in turn, help other white people do better, too.

FOR TEENS/YOUNG ADULTS:

Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, & You

by Jason Reynolds & Ibram X. Kendi, PhD

This is the reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning, designed specifically for Young Adult (YA) readers. Stamped reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.

FOR PARENTS OF WHITE KIDS:

Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America

by Jennifer Harvey, PhD

I highly recommend this book for any parent of white children or teens who are interested in equipping their children to be active and able participants in a society that is becoming one of the most racially diverse in the world while remaining full of racial tensions. This book offers practical guidelines for what you can do within your home and community, how to adopt race-conscious parenting practices, how to equip children in addressing racism when they encounter it, how to function well in a diverse nation, how to help our children understand their whiteness and its impact, and more.
